Open RAR archives on any device

RAR is a proprietary format, so Windows Explorer, macOS Finder and phones can't open it out of the box — normally you'd have to install WinRAR or 7-Zip first. Unzip.Cool does the extraction on our server instead: upload the archive over HTTPS, we unpack it (RAR and RAR5, password-protected included), and you download exactly the files you need. One hour later the upload is deleted automatically.

What this handles

What it doesn't handle

Multi-part sets (.part1.rar, .r00, .r01) need every piece present at once, and this takes a single upload — for those, a desktop app is the easier route. We'd rather say so than waste your time.

Why RAR files won't open

"You need an app to open this file"

Nothing is wrong. Windows and macOS both ship without RAR support because the format is proprietary — the operating system genuinely does not know what a .rar is. Extract it here, or install WinRAR (Windows) or The Unarchiver (Mac) if RARs reach you often.

"The archive is corrupt or damaged"

Nine times out of ten the download was cut short. Check the file size against what you expected and download it again before concluding the archive itself is broken. Genuinely damaged RARs can sometimes be partially recovered by WinRAR's repair function, but a truncated download cannot.

It asks for a password you don't have

There is no way around it, and every "RAR password remover" you'll find is either useless or malware. Ask whoever shared the archive.

Only the first file appears

You're looking at a multi-part set. All the parts belong to one archive and must be extracted together, starting from part one.

RAR, ZIP or 7Z — what's the difference?

FormatOpens natively onTypical use
ZIPWindows, macOS, Linux, phonesEveryday sharing — universal, weakest compression
RARNothing, without an appLarge downloads, split archives, recovery records
7ZNothing, without an appBest compression — software, mods, driver bundles

If you're choosing a format to send to someone else, ZIP is the one that opens everywhere without making them install anything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a RAR file without WinRAR?

Drop the .rar onto the box above. It's extracted on our server and you download the files you need. Nothing to install, works on any device.

Does it support RAR5 archives?

Yes — both the classic RAR format and the newer RAR5 format are supported.

Can I extract a password-protected RAR?

Yes. You'll be prompted for the password, then extraction continues normally.

Can I open RAR files on a Mac or phone?

Yes. Extraction happens on our server, so it works the same on macOS, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. For Mac specifically, see our guide to opening RAR files on a Mac.

Is it free? What's the size limit?

Free, no account needed, archives up to 2 GB. Files are deleted automatically one hour after upload.
